10 Goal Setting Tips That Will Create Your Success

When you are setting up and growing a business, it is vital that you set yourself goals that will drive you to succeed. In this edition of #PGsTips, I’m going to teach you a way of setting goals that will ensure you achieve the success you desire. Below is the method I was taught by a very successful entrepreneur.

Goals – the key to business success.

Over the years, one common difference I’ve noticed between people who succeed and smash their goals and those who stay stuck in a rut, is that invariably, the successful people set goals for themselves, share them with others and take expert advice. You probably know that and may have tried to set goals in the past that have not resulted in any change in behaviour. I believe the reason for this is that whilst setting goals is important, the way in which you set them is equally important.

Here are the key points you need to follow to ensure you will achieve your goals in business and life in general:

 

1. Satisfy the left hand side of your brain. This is the part of your brain that deals with logic, with facts and figures. You can satisfy this part by making sure you have a sound business plan that is based in reality, with sensible assumptions and detailed projections. Your plan needs to be ambitious, sure, but if your plan assumes you capture 90% of a market within three months without a detailed way of doing this, the left hand side of your brain will not be convinced and you will experience many blocks and find yourself being easily distracted.

 

2. Satisfy the right hand side of your brain. This is your more creative side, the side that concentrates on the whole picture. Can you describe what you see, what you hear, how you feel, when you have achieved your goal? If your goal is to buy a bigger house, for example, can you describe it in sufficient details so other people can imagine it? People who regularly achieve their goals describe them in such detail that when you listen to them, you believe they already have them, which is absolutely the point.

3. Create a physiological change. When you think about your goal; when you think about growing your business; how do you feel? If you don’t feel a combination of excitement and a little fear, then it’s time to think about changing your goal. If there is no emotion attached to your goal, the likelihood of achieving it is very small.

 

4.  Have the correct gap. It is important that you have an appropriate gap between where you are now and where your goal will take you. If your gap is too small, then you won’t feel excited and there won’t be enough “umph” to keep you going. If the gap is too large, you won’t believe you can achieve it so you will disengage and probably not bother to even start. 

5. Anything to do first? My experience in helping many clients to achieve their goals is that everybody has a responsible part of their personality. This is the part that insists, for example, that debts are paid off before you can buy a new car. In this case, the key is to include both parts of the goal and imagine a healthy bank statement along with the new car.

6. Is this goal under your control? A common mistake many people make is to chase a goal that is dependent on other people. As an example, people will decide they want to win a certain contract. This is unlikely to succeed as much of the process is outside your control, such as the quality of the other bids. It is much more effective to focus on, say, submitting the best bid you are capable of. That is completely under your control.

7. Would anyone suffer if you achieved this goal? Whilst goals, by their very nature focus on your performance and your aspirations, you are more likely to be successful if you can assure yourself that no-one will lose out when you achieve your goal.

 

8. Maintain the benefits of now. By definition, achieving your goals will result in change. It is vital that you think through the benefits you have right now. For example whilst growing your business, you may lose out on having a lot of free time. You need to resolve this dilemma in your head to make sure you get the result you want.

9. Identify the first step. If you don’t have a specific, time-based first step, then you don’t have a goal, you have a dream. Make this into a goal by detailing the first practical step you will take.

10. Make it happen. My mentor and friend Shaa Wasmund drives me to ‘make it happen’. Share your goals with a coach, mentor or friend who you respect and who will make you accountable.

Follow these ten steps and you will soon be enjoying the success you desire.
